Boxoffice Pro, the reference trade publication of theatrical exhibition, is proud to announce the inaugural Boxoffice Blue Ribbon List. This first-of-its-kind guide in the movie theater industry honors unparalleled excellence in technology, design, hospitality, and community engagement for all cinema renovations and new builds completed since 2020.
The inaugural list offers a holistic view of the modern movie theater, recognizing cinemas that set operational and presentation benchmarks. Organized by year and region, the guide’s first edition features exceptional cinemas from 45 countries that have opened or upgraded their facilities over the past six years.
“The cinema industry is undergoing a massive transformation, updating the moviegoing experience and setting new benchmarks for audiences around the world,” says Daniel Loria, senior vice president of content strategy and editorial director of Boxoffice Pro. “This initiative is our way of recognizing the effort, commitment, and investment from movie theaters around the world to deliver an exceptional moviegoing experience for today’s audiences and moviegoers of future generations.”
To assemble the list, Boxoffice Pro partnered with the International Cinema Technology Association (ICTA)— alongside influential executives in cinema operations, hospitality, and design—to review over 300 submissions from new and recently renovated cinemas around the world.
Each submission was independently scored on a scale of 1 to 10 by an esteemed panel of industry experts across four key metrics:
- Hospitality: Judged by Dan Herrle, Director of Education at the Entertainment Food & Beverage Association.
- Design: Evaluated by Kaitlyn Thornton, Founder of the private real estate advisory Plotwork.
- Technology: Assessed by a committee of 10 ICTA members, led by former UNIC CEO Jan Runge.
- Community Engagement: Evaluated holistically by globetrotting industry veteran Mariam El Bacha alongside Boxoffice Pro’s Daniel Loria, considering geographic diversity, programming, and the cinema’s role in its local community.
Cinemas with top composite scores earned spots on the inaugural list. Compiled from operator submissions, the Blue Ribbon List will be updated annually. Boxoffice Pro invites circuits that missed this year’s deadline to submit entries next year; any cinema opened or renovated since 2020 is eligible.
These honored theaters embody the values of “The Modern Theatre,” a recurring section of Boxoffice Pro that began in the late 1930s to document major innovations in cinema technology and design, from the introduction of air-conditioning to the rise of the suburban multiplex. The Blue Ribbon guide pays homage to that spirit and to the magazine’s founder, Ben Shlyen, who recognized that the success of the exhibition industry depends as much on the “house” as on the “show.”
